What It Means to Live on Purpose « Personal Growth Blog and Coaching for Black Women

What It Means to Live on Purpose

If you want to experience the best life possible you have to live on purpose. I’m sure you’ve heard some version of that statement before. It’s true. You can’t accidentally create your dream life. And if you so happen to have your dream life fall in your lap, you can’t accidentally keep it there. You have to be on purpose and intentional about achieving the things you want from life.

Success and purposeYou don’t lose weight by mistake. Unless of course you’re sick or overly stressed or depressed. But who wants to be sick, stressed and depressed to lose weight? I don’t! If you want to lose weight you have to be purposeful. You eat a certain number of calories. You watch the types of food you consume. You start or uplevel an exercise routine. You partner with a personal trainer or wellness coach to stay on track. You take specific, purposeful steps on a regular basis for however long it takes in order to lose weight.

The same is true for any other goal you have for your life. If you want to live on purpose, first you have to decide what you want in every area of your life and then you take specific, purposeful steps on a regular basis for however long it takes. Living on purpose isn’t an attitude of “it is what it is” or “I’ll see how it goes.” No, living on purpose is moving in the direction of your goals. If you don’t know which way to go ask for help. Learn from those who have already been where you want to go. If the direction changes or you find out your on the wrong path you take a different path. If you learn something new that influences your original goals you make new goals.

The point is to always be purposeful. Get clarity on what you want. Figure out what specific steps you need to take to get you there. Decide who you need to be to get want you want to have. Make sure everything you do and are aligns with that purpose.

  • When you’re making decisions, be purposeful.
  • When you’re speaking, speak on purpose.
  • When you’re spending money do so on purpose.
  • Decide what to do in your free time on purpose.
  • Whatever you do, do on purpose.
  • Whatever you think, think on purpose.

If you stay on purpose, eventually you’re going to get where you want to go. It’s the Law of Purposefulness. Okay, okay. I made that law up! It does have a nice ring to it and it’s true. If you jump in your car to go to the next town over as long as you get and stay on the right roads and don’t have any car troubles you’ll get there. On the other hand, if you get distracted and follow the road signs to the zoo you may not make there.  If you’re on purpose and you stay on purpose you inevitably will make it to the next town over. That’s the way life works.

Once you have the things you want from life you have to be on purpose and intentional about keeping them. How many times have you watched someone go out of their way to get something only to lose it later? They met that perfect guy or girl and pulled out all the stops to attract them and then months later it’s over? How many times have you yourself accomplished something only to lose progress later? You lost 15 pounds only to gain it back. You paid off all your credit card debt just to pile it back on again. Please tell me it’s not just me! We tend to be very purposeful on the acquisition but lose ground when it comes to retention.

That’s why it’s important to LIVE on purpose. Don’t just start on purpose. Don’t just create or obtain or gain or lose on purpose. STAY on purpose. That’s how you accomplish everything you’ve ever wanted to accomplish. That’s how you live your best life.
